Santa Cruz girls water polo goes 2-2 in the 2023 Amanda McDonald tournament in Menlo Park.
The Santa Cruz High School girls water polo team beat Menlo-Atherton 11-10 on Saturday afternoon to finish 7th overall at the Amanda McDonald tournament in Menlo Park. An overtime goal by Ben Sommerville put the Cardinals up for good in a hard fought match between the two teams. Senior Zoe Ann Watson had five scores, an assist, and three steals for Santa Cruz and Senior Daisy Mueller added two goals and two steals. Goalkeeper Sage Steller-Croll also came up big with 7 saves to keep the Bears in check and give the Cardinals a fighting chance to win the game. The entire Cardinal roster contributed to the victory. Both Giulia D’Souza and Violet Rubin each had (1 goal, 1 assist, 2 steals), while Kat Fanni added a goal and a steal. Daphne Olson shined on defense and had 1 assist and 1 steal, Malia Cooper had 1 assist and 2 steals, and Amalia Terazzas, who scored two in an earlier game against Redwood, added an assist. The Cardinals played four games over the Friday -Saturday tournament and had a win against Redwood (Larkspur) 9-2, and loses to both St. Ignatius 7-12 and Harker 6-8. Santa Cruz squares off against rival Soquel at home on Tuesday evening in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play. Game time is 6:30. (Michael Watson – Special to the Cardinal Club)
