A day filled with celebration for the Santa Cruz High school seniors was made even sweeter with a win over Soquel High 4-2. Soquel’s Isla Garcia-Mcdogal and Santa Cruz’s Francesca Garces had a battle at #1 singles. They split sets and the entire match was decided by 2 points in the 3rd set tiebreak! Senior, Sasha Wolfsen won at number 2 singles but not before dropping the first set and coming from behind to win. Another Senior, Polina Doronkina made quick work of her opponent and won the match in a team record 45 mins! 6-0,6-0. Julia Kennedy also won easily with her excellent serves and consistent forehand 6-3,6-0. Then Soquel picked up their pace and won close matches at #1 and #2 doubles. And lastly, at #3 doubles, Rainey Ruff and Clara Weaver got off to a slower start dropping the first four games only to come roaring back to win the set 7-5. After that they never looked back, solid serving from Clara and strong volleys from Rainey put away the second set 6-3! Santa Cruz stands second in SCCAL league play behind only Aptos. They take on Aptos next Tuesday. Photo credit: Mary Kay Pierson
